XP11 HD Mesh v4 / UHD Mesh v4 in XP12
Hi Larry,
Yes, in general both HD Mesh v4 and UHD Mesh v4 will load in X-Plane 12 because they’re just base mesh scenery. XP12 doesn’t “require” an XP12-only mesh for it to function.
That said, a couple of practical points so you know what you’re getting:
- Compatibility: They’ll work, but they’re still XP11-era meshes, so you won’t necessarily get all of XP12’s newest terrain/water/coastline behavior in areas covered by the add-on mesh. In other words, it’s compatible, but not “XP12-optimized.”
- HD vs UHD: The UHD package is typically higher resolution than HD (more terrain detail), but it also costs more disk space and can hit loading time and performance harder—especially in mountainous areas like AZ.
- Don’t stack both for the same area: Use one mesh per area. If you install both and they cover the same tiles, whichever one sits higher in your scenery order will “win,” and the other is basically wasted for those tiles.
What I’d do for Arizona
If your goal is “best terrain definition” and you’ve got the disk space, UHD is usually the one people pick for rugged terrain. If you want a more balanced setup (still improved vs default, lighter footprint), HD is often the better compromise.
Scenery order reminder (important)
Make sure the mesh sits at the bottom of your scenery_packs.ini, below airports and overlays. Mesh goes last.
A couple quick questions so I don’t steer you wrong
- Which X-Plane 12 version are you on (12.0x/12.1x etc.)?
- Are you running any overlays like SimHeaven/X-World, Ortho4XP tiles, or any other mesh-based scenery for AZ already?
- What are your system specs (mainly RAM + VRAM), and are you tight on disk space?
Answer those and I can tell you which of the two will likely be the least hassle for your setup (and how to place it cleanly in the scenery order).
