Asked

Hi, I downloaded a .bgl scenery file: MMGL_ADEX_PM.BGL.
The included instructions explain how to install it.
I followed them to the letter, but it does not appear in the scenery as published.
I have tried several different ways, and it still does not work.
Could someone please provide more detailed, step-by-step guidance to install it?

Short version first: a lone .BGL file will not show in MSFS unless it’s inside a valid package that goes in the Community folder. Also, that filename (MMGL_ADEX_...) strongly suggests an ADE/AFCAD made for FSX/P3D, which MSFS won’t use as-is.

Do this step-by-step:

  • 1) Verify what sim it’s for
    • Open the included instructions/readme.
    • If it mentions Addon Scenery\scenery or Scenery Library, it’s for FSX/P3D.
    • If it’s FSX/P3D, it won’t work in MSFS without being rebuilt.
  • 2) If it is truly for MSFS (author states MSFS/FS2020):
    • It must come as a full add-on package (a folder containing manifest.json and layout.json).
    • Install by dropping that entire folder into your Community folder.
    • Do not place only the .BGL in Community. MSFS won’t load it.
  • 3) Clean start and test
    • Temporarily move other MMGL add-ons out of Community.
    • Start the sim. Spawn at MMGL and check for changes.
  • 4) If it still doesn’t show
    • Close the sim.
    • Delete the scenery index cache. The sim rebuilds it on next start.
    • Typical locations:
      %LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\SceneryIndexes
      %APPDATA%\Microsoft Flight Simulator\SceneryIndexes

    • Restart the sim and try MMGL again.
  • 5) Conflict check
    • Make sure you don’t have a marketplace or other third-party MMGL enabled.
    • Test with only this MMGL add-on installed.

Important notes:

  • If your download only contains MMGL_ADEX_PM.BGL and no manifest.json/layout.json, it’s almost certainly an FSX/P3D AFCAD.
  • FSX/P3D-style AFCADs do not override MSFS airports by just copying the .BGL anywhere.
  • For MSFS, you either need the proper Community-ready package from the author, or the airport must be rebuilt/packaged with the MSFS SDK.

To help further, please confirm:

  • Which sim/platform build are you on (MSFS, Steam or MS Store, version)?
  • Exactly where did you put MMGL_ADEX_PM.BGL?
  • Does your download include manifest.json and layout.json, or only the single .BGL?
  • Do the instructions mention Addon Scenery\scenery or the Community folder?
  • Do you have any other MMGL add-ons installed?
