Asked

When I download the Virtavia F-86F Sabre using "Save As," the file I get is named something like unconfirmed(series of numbers).crdownload

I believe I should be getting a ZIP file that I can open. Is there a way to open the file I received so I can install the aircraft into FSX?

Thanks,
Jim

Hi Jim,

A .crdownload file is not the actual aircraft ZIP. That is Chrome/Edge’s temporary download file while the download is still in progress, or it is what gets left behind if the download failed or was interrupted.

So in most cases, you do not want to try installing or opening that file.

Try this first:

  1. Open your browser’s Downloads window.
  2. Check whether the Virtavia F-86F download shows as still downloading, paused, failed, or blocked.
  3. If it is still downloading, let it finish completely.
  4. When it finishes properly, the filename should change from something like:
    unconfirmed 123456.crdownload
    to a normal ZIP file.

  5. If it says failed, cancel/delete the partial file and download it again.

A couple of practical things to check:

  • Make sure you are saving it to a normal folder such as Downloads or Desktop, not directly into the FSX folder.
  • Temporarily try a different browser if the same thing keeps happening.
  • If your antivirus or browser security is blocking the download, it may leave the unfinished .crdownload file behind.
  • Check that you have enough free disk space.

Can you rename it to .zip?

Only sometimes, and only if the download actually completed but the browser failed to rename it. If the file size looks suspiciously small, do not bother renaming it because the ZIP will almost certainly be corrupt.

If you want to test it, make a copy of the file first, then rename the copy from:

unconfirmed 123456.crdownload

to something like:

Virtavia_F-86F_Sabre.zip

Then try opening it with Windows or your ZIP utility. If it gives an error, the download is incomplete and you’ll need to re-download it.

Once you do have the proper ZIP, extract it first and look for the included install/readme instructions. Don’t install from the unfinished download file.

Jim, which browser are you using, and does the browser’s Downloads list show the file as failed, blocked, or still in progress? Also, roughly how large is the .crdownload file you ended up with?
