every time I bring up the reference part, FS9 freezes up on me. Why is it doing this?

I had a similar problem related to the kneeboard; it turned out I had something called Viewpoint (adware) that was crashing it. If you have AOL Instant Messenger you almost certainly have it. Look for viewmgr.exe in your process list under task manager, kill it, and see if that fixes it.
