Slightly different 1722 error

Can anyone help before I put my foot through my computer?
I originally installed FSX and activated successfully - however game did not run. Message said files were missing. Checked via windows explorer and the FSX folder only contained 6gb - no aircraft, scenery etc. uninstalled and tried to reinstall but can only get a screen asking if I want to repair previous installation or remove it.Doing either option leads to a 1722 error and a 1603 after rollback.
I have read all the forums, installed the KB928080 patch, done clean boots, deleted all references in the registry,searched for deleted all fsx and fs9 files but nothing works.
Ms Tech Support useless - cant get a PID number because it doesnt install!
