Troubleshooting A320 FBW RNAV Approach APPR Button Issues in MSFS

Corgi100 Guest

There is no way for me to get the "APPR"-button in an RNAV approach to work. Am I overlooking something or have you experienced the same problem, when flying the A320 FBW (version 0.11.1 stable) in MSFS (version 1.36.2.0)?

I've taken a close look at the concerns regarding the "APPR" button in the A320 FBW (version 0.11.1 stable) within MSFS (version 1.36.2.0) and its functionality during RNAV approaches. It seems a few of you are encountering difficulties with this specific aspect of the aircraft's autopilot system. Let's dive into some troubleshooting steps and insights that might help clear up any confusion and get you back on track for smooth approaches.

Firstly, it's crucial to understand that the A320's autopilot system, particularly the APPR mode, is designed to capture and follow the glide slope and localizer for precision approaches, which includes ILS, CAT III, and RNAV to some extent. However, the RNAV approach procedure and its interaction with the APPR button can be nuanced depending on several factors such as aircraft configuration, the specific approach plate being followed, and the sim's current functionalities.

Here are some steps to consider:

  1. Ensure your MCDU (Multifunction Control Display Unit) is properly programmed with the flight plan and approach phase. This includes setting up the approach in the PERF page to ensure the aircraft is aware of the upcoming procedure.
  2. Verify that the latest AIRAC cycle is installed and correctly loaded into MSFS. Outdated navigation data can sometimes lead to mismatches in approach procedures, especially for RNAV.
  3. Cross-check the approach's waypoints and altitude restrictions against the chart to ensure alignment with the sim's navigation database. Discrepancies here can lead to issues with autopilot modes.
  4. Practice the approach in different weather conditions and time settings. Sometimes, sim-specific bugs can manifest under certain conditions, affecting autopilot behavior.

Additional Considerations:

  • Firmware updates: The FBW team regularly updates the A320neo mod, addressing bugs and adding new features. Always ensure you're running the latest version.
  • Community feedback: Engage with the flight sim community forums and the FBW Discord channel. Other pilots might have encountered similar issues and could offer solutions.
  • Simulator updates: Keep your MSFS updated. Asobo Studio continuously works on improving the sim's realism and fixing bugs, which might affect aircraft performance and systems.

If after trying these steps, you're still facing issues, it might be helpful to provide more specifics about what you're experiencing. Screenshots, detailed descriptions of your approach setup, and any error messages could offer more clues to what might be going wrong.

Remember, the A320 FBW in MSFS 2020 is a complex simulation of real-world aviation technology, and mastering it takes time and patience. Each update can change nuances in how systems work, so staying informed and adaptable is key.

Lastly, for those also navigating these challenges in X-Plane 12, many of these steps are universally applicable, especially regarding navigation data and aircraft configuration for approaches.

Safe skies and happy landings to all!

Note: This advice is based on the current state of MSFS and the A320 FBW mod as of my last update. For the most current information and updates, refer to the official MSFS and FlyByWire websites.
