When and what for should you use pitot heat and anti-ice. I've heard something about ice being on your wind screen but I've never had that.

CaptainI don't think these features work in FS. at least they don't make any difference to me....
Chief CaptainTurn on anti-ice system and/or pitot heat when flying in the clouds with a temperature below 0 degrees Celsius (simple answer). You will only get Ice if you or a program like Fspassenger, assigns a Icing layer within the atmosphere. You won't get windscreen Ice in FS.🙂
it is not true that they do nothing
if you do not switch on the pitot heat and it gets below freezing your airspeed indicator will stop working after a time because the pitot tube is iced up.
First OfficerI've tried flying in extremely cold weather without the de-ice system on to see if the flight dynamics change due to ice on the wings, and so far I haven't seen any difference. See:

I agree; several times I've had my pitot tube freeze and had to turn on pitot heat to get the airspeed indicator to work again.
But anti-ice-- never happened to me.
