I thought Id install the microsoft update 9.1 but got an error. As I had various add ons installed I thought that these could be causing a problem. (Add on VFR Scenaery, Active Camera 2004 etc).
So I uninstalled everything including FS2004 (Even deleted the Microsoft Games/FlightSim9 folder after uninstalling.
However when trying to run the fs91upd.exe downloaded from the microsoft site I still got the same message though, ie
"Update Error Type: 9"
Help !!
Just a point to note, i reinstalled jusat the FS2004 afterwards, no add ons, change of fs9 no cd etc
It sounds more like a video card driver or lack or DirectX 9.0c.
When you reinstalled do you have a folder in "My Documents" for Flight Simulator Files.

Make sure that you uninstalled it according to their directions and then step by step make the changes to install the patch to the sim.

Ok I managed to get the solution from another site.
Caused because you dont always get the full 27MB download from microsoft (mine was 19mb when I checked)
Retried until i got the full download, worked a treat.
Now busy reinstalling all the add on's i probably needn't have reisntalled ie all the uk VFR Photographic Scenery, Airports, Concord, Etc. etc.
Great! What a super shot in the dark for them, good call, I never thought of that.
Thanks for letting us know, it helps for next time.
Glad to hear that all is well.
I heard this from a MicroSoft official game expert from their support following up on something else but he told me this . If you have installed add-on aircraft you should'nt install the update because it can make 90% of your add-on aircraft unusable on FS9 (Flight Simulator 2004).
He said that it has to do with the setup of the update and you cannot fix this problem in the update. However you can uninstall and reinstall FS9 and the update will be gone.
I hope this helps with anyone that is thinking about installing the update.
Good Luck with all of your problems!!
